Officials break ground on JCF Park improvements

Local officials celebrated the projected improvements at John C. Fremont Park Tuesday morning with a groundbreaking ceremony.

The $2.3 million dollar project includes an amphitheater, new restrooms and landscaping improvements. Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg provided some background on the project.

“The improvements that are going to be made here are just going to enhance this area,” the mayor said.

Spellerberg noted that the new police station as well as a new RVR Bank site – both located  to the east of JCF Park – helped trigger the move.

“We thought about how we can make this north downtown area more inviting, more welcoming, more walkable and get more people into our community,” he said. “That is how this idea of John C. Fremont Park upgrades really came to be.”

The mayor said that community feedback for the project was crucial.

“We started on a park master plan,” he said. “We talked to a lot of you in the community about what you wanted to see in this area. …We really tried to get feedback from the whole community and these improvements are exciting.”

Fremont Parks and Recreation Director Nick Hansen said that many other improvements are planned in the city.

“We have a 10-year plan and this is just the first (phase) that we have moving forward for the future of parks and rec,” he said.

Hansen said officials at first thought of having a smaller amphitheater, but that changed after master plan discussions.

“This is probably going to be one of the better amphitheaters, I think, around the area,” he said.
