Oxygen show to focus on Schnabel tragedy

Sandy Schnabel was a beloved championship volleyball coach who had her life cut short by her murderous husband.

Now Schnabel’s story will be told on the Oxygen Network’s “Accident, Murder or Suicide” that will be shown on Sunday night. The program includes interviews with investigators and former members of the Yutan volleyball team that Schnabel coached before her death.

The show is scheduled to air at 6 Saturday night, but is subject to change.

In May of 1999, Schnabel, 40, was murdered by her husband, Mark, while the couple’s three young children were at home.

Prosecutors claim Mark Schabel killed his wife following an argument. He then staged an accident with the couple’s minivan and also set fire to the van and storage shed.

Schnabel was eventually found guilty of second-degree murder after he reached a plea agreement that reduced the charges from first-degree murder. He was sentenced in November of 1999 to life in prison without parole.

Sandy Schnabel was a business teacher and coach for the Chieftains for 12 years. She guided Yutan to the 1992 Class C-1 state title.
