Fremont Public Schools is mourning the loss of a student and her brother as the result of an auto accident Friday in Omaha.

Melissa Ajanel Suar was scheduled to begin the fifth grade at Johnson Crossing Academic Center. She was a fourth-grade student at Washington Elementary during the 2024-2025 school year.

Melissa’s sibling, Jose Angel Ajanel-Suar, a 2025 Fremont High School graduate, also died in the accident.

“This is a tragic loss for our community and school district. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Melissa and Jose,” Fremont Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brad Dahl said.

The District Crisis Team was available at Washington Elementary on Sunday afternoon.  The team will also be available from 8 to 10 a.m. on Monday at Washington and JCAC.  Counselors will also be available throughout the week as FPS begins classes Tuesday.
