The Salvation Army will have its Red Kettle Kickoff at 9 a.m. Friday at 707 N. I St. in Fremont.

“This is another way for the public to come and support us and enjoy the start to the kettle season,” Lt. Rodney Morin said.

Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg is scheduled to speak. The Fremont Middle School will be performing. Cookies and refreshments, including hot chocolate, will be served.

Dan Nelson will be introduced as the 2022 Christmas Chair.

“He is someone that used to be on the Salvation Army Advisory Board,” Morin said. “He volunteered for our toy shop for a number of years. He’s a resident of Fremont and he has a passion for the community. He wants to support us and we’re blessed to have people like that support us and give us their time.”

Morin said the Salvation Army has a goal of $48,000 for its kettle drive.

“Last year we were able to raise $44,000 and our kettle goal was $25,000,” he said. “We saw the generosity of Fremonters last year helping us reach almost 200% of our kettle goal.”

Morin notes that the current state of the economy has caused the goal to go up from 2021.

“It is because of the way things have (been) this year with inflation and the gas prices going crazy,” he said. “Already this year we are almost at 500 kids that we’re expecting to serve with toys.”

Kettles are currently located at Hy-Vee and Hobby Lobby. Walmart and Baker’s will also be participating. Morin said bell ringers will be at Walmart starting Saturday.

“Walmart usually lets us ring after Thanksgiving, but this year they’ve been kind enough to let us ring before Thanksgiving,” he said. “That will allow us to try and bring in funds from that Thanksgiving rush.”

Bell ringers will be at Baker’s beginning on Nov. 25.

“We’re grateful for the support from all of the local businesses,” Morin said.
