Dahl captures Gatorade state cross country honor

Elli Dahl of Fremont School has been named the 2021-22 Gatorade Nebraska Girls Cross Country Player of the Year.

Dahl is the first athlete from FHS to win the Gatorade girls cross country honor.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Dahl as Nebraska’s best high school girls cross country player.

The University of Nebraska signee is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Player of the Year award to be announced in February.

The 5-foot-1 senior won the Class A state meet this past season with a time of 17:58.0, breaking the tape 29.5 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. She led the Tigers to a state runner-up finish in the team standings.

Dahl is the first Nebraska prep girl to break 18 minutes in a 5-kilometer race.

“Elli is a fantastic runner,” said Theresa Gosnell, head coach at Omaha Westside. “Her traits that stand out to me are her amazing speed and great strategy when running and winning her races.”

Dahl has maintained a weighted 4.29 GPA in the classroom.

“Elli’s impact on our team and culture has been undeniable-in her four years of cross country, she is one of the hardest workers and most dependable kids on our team, and in our school,” stated Jake Smrcina, FHS girls cross country head coach.
