Dorothy Mae Haar age 93, formerly of Fremont, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2022, in Lincoln surrounded by her loving family. Born September 23, 1928, in Versailles, Missouri to Ora and Lois (Deffenbaugh) Foxworthy, Dorothy was no stranger to hard work. At age 14, she quit school to work in a pants factory. In 1950, shortly after moving to Dodge City, Kansas, she went to work for Sol Haar at the Shangri La Restaurant. She would marry Haar in 1951 and together they would run one of the most successful steakhouses in the country.

In the late 1950s the couple would move their restaurant to Fremont and later to Waterloo in 1972. For nearly 40 years she was the quiet engine that drove the business’s success. In 1991, after the death of her husband Sol, she would continue to run the restaurant successfully for another 17 years until her retirement in 2007.

In her life, she served presidents and stars of the stage and screen. Yet, it was her greatest pleasure serving her loyal customers, neighbors, and friends. She is survived by her son Paul (Tara) Haar of Lincoln; sister Mary Via of Indianapolis, Indiana; four grandchildren (Hailey and Caden Haar of Lincoln, Dale Haar of Atlanta, and Michael Haar of Kansas City), and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her blood relation, she always considered the employees of Harr’s restaurant her extended family.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sister, and several nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the Tabitha Hospice fund or the Food Bank of Lincoln.
