State lakes to host Halloween event Saturday

Trick-or-treaters can get a jump on Halloween during an event Saturday at the Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area.

The Halloween Campsite Decorating Contest and Trick-or-Treating is set for 5 to 7 Saturday night.

“Campers, tent campers or people that have RVs will decorate their campsites for a contest,” said Park Superintendent Bill Booth of the Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area. “First and second place will get a small prize. We open it up from 5 to 7 for trick-or-treaters to come out … meet different people, get a little bit of candy and just enjoy the outdoors while doing so.”

Booth said the event has been conducted for about five years.

“We took a little bit of a break last year, but it has become super popular,” he said. “It is a nice place to walk with your kids and keep them in a safe environment as well as get them some Halloween candy early. In the last couple years here we’ve sold out our campgrounds while doing it.”

The park superintendent believes it is an easy way for children to trick-or-treat.

“Essentially, it is like visiting 200 houses all within a small park area,”  Booth said.

A park permit is required for the event.

“It is really a small cost to come out and enjoy a nice day,” Booth said.
