FPD, Dodge County Sheriff’s Office participate in campaign

Lt. Kurt Bottorff of the Fremont Police Department said the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” grant campaign through the Nebraska Department of Transportation was a success.

“Hats off to Sgt. (Kurt) Pafford who kind of organized all of this and set it all up,” Bottorff said. “There were some really good results, including 138 total contacts.”

The program ran Aug. 20 through Sept. 6. Seven officers worked 105 overtime hours during the grant period.

There were 67 citations for speeding, two felony arrests, one reckless driving arrest, three driving under the influence of alcohol arrests, two open container of alcohol arrests, one seat belt violation citation, two fugitives arrested and 72 total citations issued.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office also participated in the campaign. In addition to various citations, there were 14 arrests for impaired driving.

“We can’t stress this enough: Drunk driving is deadly, illegal behavior and it puts the driver, his or her passengers and other road users at a terrible risk,” Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen said. “This campaign helps our law enforcement officers better address this problem head on. If you feel impaired by any substance, do not get behind the wheel of a vehicle.”

In 2019, 6,877 drivers were arrested for DUI and 1,542 drivers were involved in alcohol-related crashes. Of all alcohol-related crashes in Nebraska, there were 51 fatalities and an additional 657 injuries in 2019.
