First Lutheran event to remember 9/11, honor heroes

First Lutheran Church is organizing a public event for area residents to gather to remember one of the most tragic events in American history.

The church will be honoring first responders and also victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a Community Remembrance program Saturday morning.

Becky Poppe, director of publications for the church, said the event will have a Beginning Commemoration at 7:46 a.m. at the Eternal Flame at Veterans Park, 1558 E. Military Ave. That time coincides with the moment the first plane hit the World Trade Center’s North Tower in New York.

A moment of silence will be observed. Mark Harman, vocal music director for Fremont High School, and students will sing the National Anthem.

“We just want to make sure the community knows they are invited,” Poppe said. “They can come for a part of it or the whole thing. It will have a quiet start at the eternal flame.”

If available, Fremont firemen and police officers will accompany those who wish to walk from the eternal flame to the church’s west parking lot, 3200 E. Military Ave., for the Final Commemoration.

“At 8:30 we’re hoping to start the second part of it which will really be honoring our local heroes, those who continue to serve,” Poppe said.

Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg is among the scheduled speakers. Representatives from the fire and police departments are also expected to deliver remarks. The Broad Street Revue will provide special music and refreshments will be available.

The church is also providing 350 yard signs expressing gratitude to first responders.

Poppe said it is important for the community to come together for the 20th anniversary of the attacks and also show gratitude for the fire and law enforcement officials.

“This is just a good way to remember what happened and to celebrate how we continue to move forward,” she said. “It is also a good way to thank those who are so willing to serve us.”
