Freshmen shine in their Husker debut, as the Nebraska soccer team recorded a 5-0 exhibition victory over South Dakota in front of 472 fans at Hibner Stadium on Wednesday night.
In the 44th minute, Abbey Schwarz, a freshman from Bennington, Neb., fired a cross kick that found the back of the net, and Nebraska closed the first half with a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Sarah Weber scored her first of two goals on the night in the 58th minute. Weber broke through the defense and shot the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal, past the diving Emma Harkleroad.
In the 60th minute, off an assist from Weber, Eleanor Dale slides and shoots the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Adding to her impressive performance, Weber strikes again in the 68th minute, scoring Nebraska’s third goal of the half and fourth of the game.
Freshman Allison Napora closed out the scoring for the Huskers with a kick inside the 6-yard box in the 82nd minute. Napora recorded four shots and three shots on goal in her first game as a Husker.
Junior Makinzie Short started at goal for the Huskers, recording two saves. Freshman Cece Villa and sophomore transfer Samantha Hauk came in relief of Short, and Hauk recorded her first save as a Husker.
Nebraska continues exhibition play as they host North Dakota State on Friday, Aug. 13 starting at 7:05 p.m. (CT). Nebraska’s regular-season opener is set for Thursday, Aug.19 at home against Western Illinois.
