Three die as result of Saunders County crash

Authorities have identified the three victims killed as a result of Tuesday night’s two-vehicle crash in Saunders County.
Siblings Monica Chohon, 18, James Chohon, 11, and Andrew Chohon were pronounced dead following the accident that occurred at about 7 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and Nebraska Highway 109, the Nebraska State Patrol said.
The driver of the second vehicle, Tobias Hartung, 40, of Fremont was not injured in the crash.
Authorities said Monica Chohon was driving a Pontiac Grand AM southbound on Highway 109. She stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with Highway 77. About the same time, an unknown eastbound vehicle stopped in the left lane of 77, which has the right of way at the intersection.
The Chohon vehicle then attempted to proceed through the intersection and was hit by an eastbound Dodge Ram 3500 pickup driven by Hartung traveling in the right lane of 77, the NSP said.
Monica Chohon was a 2021 graduate of Bishop Neumann High School in Wahoo. The school’s Facebook page posted that James was a sixth-grade student at St. John Nepomucene School while Andrew was homeschooled.
Investigators would like to speak with the driver of a third vehicle that was stopped in the left lane of Highway 77 prior to the crash.
Anyone with information about that witness is asked to call NSP at 402-479-4921.
