Mike Baker kids fishing event set for Saturday

Mike Baker was passionate about fishing.

“He really was,” said Debbie Baker, Mike’s widow. “When our kids were younger, he loved taking them fishing. He really liked it when they brought their friends and he could teach them about fishing.”

Mike’s love for the sport continues with the Mike Baker Memorial Kids Fishing Day. The 10th annual event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Johnson Lake in Fremont.

The 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19, but Debbie is hoping residents will be eager to return to the lake this year.

“I’m really excited about it and I’m sure that people are excited to get out there,” she said.

Participants can register for the event by calling Mike’s sister, Pam Hindman, at 402-660-3540. Baker said officials with the Nebraska Game and Parks will be on hand to make sure youths have poles and bait.

“You don’t have to have anything,” Baker said. “A lot of kids come without stuff, but we have everything that they’ll need to fish. If they aren’t familiar with it, we have people walk around the lake to help them. If someone doesn’t want to touch the worms or something, we have people that will do that.”

Baker would prefer advanced registration to help estimate the number of participants for the hot dog and chips lunch that follows. However, walk-ups the day of the event are welcomed.

Youths will receive a gift for participating. Baker stressed that the event is just a fun morning of fishing and not a contest.

“We want all the kids to enjoy it and get something,” she said. “We want kids from the past to come back and we hope to attract some new kids and their families.”
