Relay for Life events to begin Sunday

A signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society is back in Fremont for its 23rd year.

The Relay for Life of Dodge County kicks off a week of events on Sunday. Funds raised go toward research, programs and services, said Diane Wilson of the Relay.

A face-to-face event didn’t occur in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wilson said that will also be the case this year for the event that has the theme, “Making the impossible possible.”

“It is going to be virtual again this year because we want to keep everyone safe,” she said. “The American Cancer Society has not lifted their restriction. We felt, though, it was important to keep the Relay for Life at this time of the year for folks who support us.”

Sunday is also National Cancer Survivors Day. Activities begin that day with Hy-Vee providing grab-and-go meals from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The meals are free for registered survivors. Additional meals are available to the public for a free-will donation.

At 1:30 p.m in the Fremont Mall parking lot (between Hy-Vee and the old  Gordmans Store), a Care-A-Van will honor cancer survivors.

“We did it last year and we drive around and have a good time,” Wilson said. “We just try to come up with something every day of the week to mark the event and remind people of why we do what we do.”

On June 7 will be “Mission Monday” where relay team members display signs in their yards. Frontline workers will be recognized through social media.

“We encourage people to do the signs, decorate their house or anything to bring attention to Relay for Life,” Wilson said.

June 8 will feature “Teams Tuesday” where relay teams can post throwback pictures and stories on social media.

June 9 will be “Why I Relay Wednesday.” Participants can tell why they take part in Relay for Life and post a video on their social media.

“Everybody has a story and everybody has a reason why they participate in Relay for Life,” said Wilson, who had a sister pass away from leukemia. “It is a good time to share that story.”

“Thank You Thursday” will be June 10. Participants are encouraged to thank corporate sponsors on social media. It is also encouraged to write thank you notes to healthcare workers.

Wilson said First State Bank and Trust, Hy-Vee Food Store, Bill Christian Auction Co., Anesthesia Care Specialists, Pinnacle Bank, Sid Dillon, Fremont Contract Carriers, Fremont Kiwanis and Nebraska Cancer Specialists are among the sponsors.
“Those are just some of them that have been with us,” she said.” We have others that offer in-kind services that, unfortunately due to COVID-19, we haven’t needed those services.”

June 11 will be “FUNraising Friday” where participants are encouraged to spend the day with family and friends and spread the word about Relay for Life.

June 12 will be “Relay Day” where a pre-recorded luminaria ceremony will be posted on Facebook. At dusk, participants display luminaria bags on their driveways, sidewalks or porches. They can also take a photo and post it on social media.

Luminaria bags will be available for a freewill donation by contacting a team member at the Care-A-Van or by calling 402-690-3734.
