Sheriff’s department probes theft of guns, tools

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of several guns and tools from a residence on May 20.

Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen said the thefts occurred at a residence south of Uehling on County Road G, west of U.S. Highway 77.

“From the shop building on that property, individuals stole seven firearms from a gun safe,” Hespen said. “They include two muzzle loaders, four rifles and a shotgun. Also taken were ammunition, holsters and that sort of thing. There were also a lot of Snap-on tools taken.”

The sheriff said the total loss is estimated at more than $14,000.

“So obviously that is a significant loss for that individual,” Hespen said. “If anyone has any information concerning the guns or the tools, we’d appreciate a phone call at 402-727-2700.”

The department is also participating in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign. It began on May 24 and will run through Sunday.

“Deputies will be out spending some extra time looking for various traffic infractions and just trying to keep the roads safe,” the sheriff said.

During the campaign, the department has issued one citation for a child restraint violation, three seatbelt tickets, four DUIs, two MIPs and recovered one stolen vehicle.

“That doesn’t include any of the other traffic stuff that we’re still compiling, but that is just some of the basic information that has transpired during (that) period,” Hespen said.

The sheriff’s department is actively hiring. Hespen said they are taking applications from now through June 11.

“If anyone is interested in a law enforcement career, you can go online at Dodgecountysheriff.ne.com, click on the application tab and fill out the application,” Hespen said. “Once it is submitted, you’ll receive an email back saying it has been successfully received. After that, all the correspondence will be done via the email that you’ve supplied us.”
