Board of education hears citizens’ committee update

Fremont Public Schools Associate Superintendent Brad Dahl provided a Citizens’ Committee update to the board of education on Monday night.

The committee met for a third time on May 3 at Fremont High School to explore options for a bond issue for later this year. Sandi Proskovec, Jon Ludvigsen and Todd Hansen have represented the board at the meetings.

The panel had the opportunity to tour FHS at the meeting.

“That was a real benefit,” Dahl said. “Being able to get the citizens’ committee to see the locker rooms and rooms we had remodeled and what a remodel would look like in that facility. We were all able to have a common knowledge of the state of facilities at Fremont High School. We had three different groups and we moved around and we had a lot of great questions about various aspects of the building that has been added onto five times and was originally built in 1960. … We were able to walk through and tell that story.”

The associate superintendent said the committee went over the timeline and also reviewed information. A fourth meeting is scheduled for May 17 with the time and location yet to be determined. Officials are targeting an August, September or October special election.

The committee offered some opinions on some key areas, including the proximity of Clarmar Elementary School to FHS.

“They felt strongly that the high school needs to have its own campus and as a result Clarmar should be rebuilt at a new site,” Dahl said. “We’re looking for some potential sites so the citizens’ committee can consider that and ultimately the board can make the decision on what way they want to go.”

The committee also considered the cost of a new high school with similar square footage. The potential costs of the various projects were also explored.

“We tied some of the dollar amounts that go into these projects,” Dahl said. “I think we’re moving more into this direction again — kind of that middle-of-the-road dollar amount. I think that is where we’re starting to trend a bit.”

That figure is estimated at about $122 million.

In other business, the board started the process to fill the vacancy left after Dan Moran’s death last month. A motion was passed acknowledging the vacancy.

The deadline to submit a letter of interest/resume is May 21. An AdHoc committee meeting (if needed) to screen applicants to no more than five to be interviewed would be May 24. A special board meeting will be conducted two days later to appoint the new member.
The board unanimously approved the motion for out-of-state travel Dec. 15-19 for the Fremont High School boys and girls basketball teams. The Tigers will participate in the KSA Tournament in Orlando, Fla.

Also approved was the purchase of 100 Chromebooks from Riverside Technology Inc., at a total cost of $31,000. A motion also carried to proceed with the Elementary Projector Replacement Project, upon approval of the Title I Amendment, at a total cost not to exceed $275,000.
