Williams, Nelsen to lead FHS programs

The new Fremont High School boys basketball coach knows his way around the Al Bahe Gymnasium.

On Friday, the school announced that Mark Williams is the new coach. Williams, who is currently the director of counseling at Fremont High School, coached the Tigers for 17 years. He guided the Tigers to a Class A state runner-up finish in 2016 before resigning in 2019.

Williams replaces Joe Tynon, who recently resigned from the position.

“Fremont High School is happy to welcome Coach Williams back to our athletic department staff,” FHS Activities Director Scott Anderson said. “His passion and enthusiasm for the game of basketball and the students of Fremont High School are second to none.”

Fremont also has a new head volleyball coach.

Karen Nelsen, who has coached the junior varsity the past three years, will replace Cindy Kostek, who recently resigned from the position.

Nelsen is a science teacher at Johnson Crossing Academic Center and has been with Fremont Public Schools for 17 years.

“Fremont High School is excited to hire a coach that has been such a hard-working member of our coaching staff for the past three years,” Anderson said. “Karen’s energy, enthusiasm and leadership abilities make her a great fit to lead FHS volleyball into the future.”
