MU, OCM partner for scholarship opportunities

A partnership between Midland University and the Omaha Conservatory of Music is creating scholarship opportunities for performing arts students.
Midland will provide scholarships to high school seniors who are participating in lessons through the Conservatory. Scholarships begin at $21,000 per year and could be increased based on academic qualifications.
“We are so excited to offer scholarships to Omaha Conservatory of Music students. Omaha Conservatory is an incredible organization with fantastic teachers and students who have dedicated themselves to the study of music in their pre-college days,” Midland Director of Performing Arts Sorensen-Wang said. “Midland gives students the opportunity to take the next step and participate in music ensembles and other performance opportunities at the collegiate level, no matter what field of study they choose.”

Ruth Meints, Executive Director for Omaha Conservatory of Music, views the partnership as an avenue to provide assistance to Conservatory students as they seek to utilize their talents at the collegiate level.
“The Omaha Conservatory is proud to graduate some of the best students (both academically and musically) in the state,” she said. “We are always excited to provide scholarship opportunities for these outstanding students.”
Midland offers music performance opportunities for students with various interests, including band, choir, a cappella groups, and jazz combos. Midland also stages three musicals each year. Students have the opportunity to take individual lessons, learn from guest artists on campus, teach music lessons in the K-12 Midland Performing Arts Studio, and take advantage of courses tailored to their interests.

“Midland University’s “Arts for All” mentality is the driving force behind our department. Students are eligible for scholarships in music, theatre, dance, studio art, and speech, regardless of their degree program,” Sorensen-Wang said. “They may choose to major in Arts Management or Music Education, or any other academic program we offer from Digital Marketing to Nursing. As a result, we have a wonderfully diverse group of students brought together by their passion for the arts.”

Sorensen-Wang believes the partnership will allow students to capitalize on the opportunities presented to them and excel as both students and performers. “Because of the high standards of musicianship for both students and faculty at Omaha Conservatory of Music, we know that these students will be stepping into college with a high degree of expertise and experience in music,” she said. “We would love to have them be part of the arts at Midland.”
