Local Sports Today with Rich Ray – January 22

FREMONT – Here’s a look at local sports today and a preview of what’s coming up this weekend in local sports:

Basketball

The NSAA Board of Directors voted yesterday to keep the State Girls and Boys Basketball Championships in Lincoln this year, with a slight modification.  Instead of the regular three-day tournament, the tournament will be stretched out to 5-day events, giving more time between games for cleaning and social distancing, due to the pandemic.
The Archbishop Bergan girls and boys basketball teams hosted Lincoln Lutheran at Gary D. Schmidt Gymnasium, last night.
In girls action, Bergan led early, 5-2, but the Warriors went on a 24-0 run to take control on the way to a 45-26 victory.  Lincoln Lutheran was led in scoring by Katelynn Oxley with nine points.  Bergan got 16 from Lauren Baker, in the loss.  The Warriors are 12-1 and play at Bishop Neumann, tonight.  Bergan is 9-5 and plays at Columbus Scotus, this evening.
In the boys game, Bergan had a 23-13 lead in early in the second quarter, before Lincoln Lutheran went on a run to take a 30-26 halftime lead.  Bergan would bounce back, though, in the second half and jump ahead and hold on for a 56-46 victory.  Assistant Coach Doug Moore talked about the win:

The Knights put four players in double figures.  Sam Sleister, Max Nosal and Shaye Hoyle scored 11 points, while Gavin Logemann added 10.  Josh Duitsman led the Warriors with 14 points.  Lincoln Lutheran is 6-8 and plays at Bishop Neumann, tonight.  Bergan is 8-6 and plays at Columbus Scotus tonight.

The Fremont High swim team hosted Grand Island yesterday, at the Dillon Family Aquatics Center.  Grand Island beat Fremont in the girls dual, 95-69 and also in the boys’ dual 100-68.  Lucy Dillon won the 50 free in 26.71.  John Monson won the boys 50 free in 23.82.  Monson won the 100 free in 51.47.  The Tigers girls 200 free relay was first in 1:45.65.  The girls 400 free relay also was first in 3:58.04.  The Tiger boys 400 free relay was first in 3:31.78.
