Local Sports Today with Rich Ray – January 19

FREMONT – Here’s your daily look at the world of local sports with Rich Ray:

Bowling

In high school bowling at 30 Bowl in Fremont yesterday, the Fremont High girls lost to Columbus, 17-4.

Wrestling

Midland Warriors’ freshman Serenity Durham Goree was the team’s highest earner at the York Open Tournament, with a second-place finish in the 116-pound weight class. Six Midland U wrestlers competed overall.

Hockey

Midland University’s women’s hockey team took to the ice for a two-game series with Lindenwood University over the weekend. The Warriors’ last game coming into the New Year was back on October 11 at North Dakota State. Postponement ensued after that win until the calendar flipped to 2021. The rust was evident at times during the weekend games as they fell 3-2 on Saturday and then lost a heartbreaker 2-1 in overtime on Sunday.
The No. 11 Omaha hockey team built a three-goal lead in the second period and hung on for a 3-2 win over Colorado College on Monday at Broadmoor World Arena. The Mavericks, playing their first game in 27 days due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ran their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1), improving to 7-3-1 overall and 7-3-1-1-0 (1) in the NCHC.  The win moved them into third place in the standings.  The Tigers fell to 3-8-2 overall and 3-8-2-0-1 (2) in the conference, putting them eighth. The two teams finish the two-game series on Tuesday at 8:07 p.m. CT.

Basketball

The Nebraska women’s basketball team hopes to keep building momentum as the Huskers play host to Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon in Lincoln. Tip-off between the Big Red (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten) and Golden Gophers (2-7, 1-6 Big Ten) at Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 3 p.m. (CT).
