Local Sports Today with Rich Ray – December 23, 2020

FREMONT – Here’s your look at local sports with Rich Ray for today, December 23rd, 2020:
The battle of the #1 and #2 ranked girls basketball teams in the state lived up to it’s billing last night at Lincoln Pius X High School.  In the end, the defending state champs and #1 ranked Thunderbolts defeated the Fremont Tigers, 66-62.  Alexis Markowski led Pius with 22 points.  Adison Markowski added 18, while Jillian Aschoff scored 13.  Fremont was led by Taylor McCabe with 18 points.  Charli Earth scored 17 and Sarah Shepard added 16.
Pius is 3-0 on the season and will play either Norfolk or Columbus in the HAC Tournament quarterfinals, Tuesday at 2pm at Pius.  Fremont is 6-1 and will host either Lincoln North Star or Lincoln Northeast, next Tuesday at 2pm, at Al Bahe Gymnasium, in the HAC Tournament.
The Bergan Knights defeated Pierce, 32-29 in the Knight Holiday Classic at Gary D. Schmidt Gymnasium, last night.  Bergan is now 6-1 on the season.
In high school boys bowling, yesterday, Fremont beat Columbus, 13-8.
In high school wrestling, Fremont defeated Lincoln Southeast, 45-36.  Justin Leon at 152, Thomas Wentz at 170, Nathan Taylor at 182, Joel Malzahn at 113, Derek Alfaro at 126 and Felix Bernal at 132 all recorded wins by fall.
The Nebraska men’s basketball team led by double digits in the first half and was on top with 14 minutes to play Tuesday night at No. 9 Wisconsin, but the defending Big Ten champion Badgers used a pair of big scoring runs to spoil the Huskers’ upset bid in a 67-53 victory.
Nebraska, which has faced a top-10 opponent in two of its last three games, returns home on Christmas Day to take on No. 19 Michigan at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tipoff for Friday’s game is set for 5 p.m.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team wraps up a two-game Big Ten road swing through Indiana by battling the Purdue Boilermakers on Wednesday afternoon in West Lafayette. Tip-off between the Huskers (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) and Boilermakers (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) at Mackey Arena is set for 1 p.m. (CT).
