Warriors Remain Unbeaten with Pair of Wins at Bellevue Classic

BELLEVUE, Neb. – Midland University’s women’s basketball team participated in the Bellevue Classic this past weekend improving to 3-0 on the season with good team wins over Presentation College Saints and Bellevue University Bruins.
In Friday’s game, the Warriors were able to go out and dominate Presentation by going on multiple runs in the first two quarters of play. Midland was shooting lights out in the first half shooting 10-17 (58.8 percent) from the floor and 4-10 (40 percent) behind the arch. Makenna Sullivan led the team with seven points in eight minutes in the first half. The Warriors went into halftime with a 47-17 lead.
Going into the fourth quarter, Midland would have a 67-30 lead over the Saints giving head coach Shawn Gilbert a comfortable lead to let his bench come in and play by having everyone who suited up getting at least seven minutes of playing time.
Midland won the game 82-57 over Presentation, improving to 2-0 on the season with the biggest lead of 38 points on the night. Lexis Haase would be the leading scorer for the Warriors with 10 points. Midland also outrebounded Presentation 53-41. 12 out of the 14 players for Midland were able to contribute to the score too.
In Saturday’s game against the Bellevue Bruins, Bellevue came out very aggressively in the first half dominating Midland on the glass and scoring. Midland was able to go up 26-25 with a 6-0 run to start the second quarter. That run was not enough for the Warriors as the Bruins were able to go on their own 18-5 run to close out the first half with a 45-34 lead.
Midland made adjustments during halftime by coming out in the third quarter by having a 6-0 run and a 9-2 run to make the Bruins lead down to three points (51-48) going into the fourth quarter.
The Warriors were able to heat up by scoring the first 10 points of the fourth quarter by gaining the 58-51 lead. To close out the game, Midland was able to go on a 12-2 run to capture the 77-69 victory over Bellevue. The Warriors outscored the Bruins 43-24 in the second half by shooting 44 percent to 25.7 percent on the floor.
Midland had three players having double-doubles. Haase would lead the way with 27 points and 11 rebounds, Sullivan with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Katy Gathje with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Midland (3-0) will have a week to prepare before entering Great Plains Athletics Conference (GPAC) play. The Warriors will travel to (11) Concordia University to open up conference play in Seward, Neb. on November 10 with a 6:00 pm tip-off. Concordia has run the table in the GPAC by being both regular season and tournament champions for the past four seasons.
