AMES, Iowa – Midland University suffered their first two losses of the season as they fell to Iowa State University in a home-and-home series over the weekend. The Warriors hosted the Cyclones on Friday before a return trip to Ames, Iowa on Saturday afternoon. ISU took game one 6-2 in Fremont and game two 4-2 in Ames.
Friday night’s game started with a bang for the Warriors as Ondrej Blaha scored to put Midland up 1-0 in the first minute of play. ISU would even the score just past the midway point of the period to knot things up at the first intermission.
After the break, it was the Cyclones coming out hot as they struck the back of the net twice in the first 1:19. They would add two more in the period via the power-play, taking a commanding 5-1 lead into the final intermission.
Midland would battle back in the third, pulling within striking distance with another goal by Blaha at the 5:39 mark. Kolten Wright assisted on an even-strength score.
At the 12:08 mark, ISU put the game out of reach, scoring their sixth goal on the night to cap the four-goal victory.
Angus Laing suffered the loss, going 27:44 in net while allowing four goals with 11 saves. Jaden Gardner came in as a replacement and allowed a pair of goals while saving 16 shots.
On Saturday, Midland fought back and tied the game at the 8:01 mark as Mason Cirone lit the lamp to tie the game 1-1. Iowa State opened the game with a goal in the third minute of action and then broke the game open with two more before the first break in the action.
The Warriors would get a goal back as Phil Liakakos shot a puck to the back of the net in the second period of action to make it 3-2. That’s where things would stay for roughly the next 20 minutes as both teams traded shots and spent equal time in the penalty boxes.
At the 2:43 mark, just into the third and final period, the Cyclones added an insurance goal and then rode their defense to a 4-2 win.
Laing suffered defeat once more, going the full game collecting 37 saves along the way.
Midland (4-2) will likely be off until the first of the year now as their games against Minot State were canceled recently due to ongoing concerns around elevated cases of COVID in North Dakota. Stay tuned to www.MidlandAthletics.com for any updates as they become available.
