JLEC – Why Build a New Facility Now?

img_4345

FREMONT – The first public meeting regarding the Joint Law Enforcement Center (JLEC) was held Tuesday. The City of Fremont also released the third JLEC educational flyer of the eight-part series today.

Both the Dodge County Supervisors and the Fremont City Council unanimously approved bond language at the beginning of September that seeks Dodge County voters’ approval of a new Joint Law Enforcement Center that will provide a one-stop-shop for public safety needs in Dodge County and Fremont.

The proposed new facility will house:

  • Dodge County Sheriff’s Department
  • Fremont Police Department
  • 911 Communications Center

Fremont citizens will vote on a county and city ballot question regarding the proposed JLEC, while voters living outside of Fremont in Dodge County will only vote on the county ballot question.
The third educational flyer regarding the Joint Law Enforcement Center focuses on why the two departments and the communications center believe it is important to build the center now for the public’s safety and it will be the most cost-effective.

The first public meeting for the JLEC was held on Tuesday, September 22. Nine citizens attended the meeting and eight city and police department officials were there to answer questions and receive feedback from the public.

“The meeting felt very positive. The citizens that were there mainly asked questions regarding the possibility of a jail addition later on down the road, the cost-effectiveness of building now, and a few questions about maintenance and upkeep of our current facilities and how we will work to keep a new facility in the best shape possible,” said Lieutenant Shane Wimer of the Fremont Police Department.

The first half-hour of the public meeting was informal. Cops and sheriffs were around the room chatting with the citizens and answering questions. The second-half of the meeting, Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen and Fremont Police Chief Jeff Elliott were at the front of the room answering questions and giving information regarding key aspects as to why a JLEC would be beneficial for the departments.
Wimer said he felt that the citizens were now well-equiped and ready to make an informed decision come November.

“I think that those who were at the meeting had their questions answered and they were able to receive information that they weren’t aware of before-hand. We will continue to provide information to the public that helps them decide if this is the right choice for our community right now. I hope to see more community members at the next public meeting and encourage people to reach out to us with any questions they have. It’s important to us that the public knows what they are voting for in November and that they have all of the information they need to make an informed decision.”

The next public meeting will be held on October 22 at the Fremont City Auditorium Community Room (925 N Broad Street) from 6:30 – 7:30 pm.
Dodge County Sheriff and Fremont Police representatives are also out each week hosting “Talk Shop with a Cop” at different grocers in Fremont. You can discuss the JLEC, ask questions, and give feedback to the representatives at the following locations each week in September and October from 5-6 pm.

  • Tuesdays at Hyvee
  • Wednesdays at Walmart
  • Thursdays at Baker’s
