FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University Football will kick off its 2020 campaign on Saturday afternoon when they host Dordt University. The Warriors will look to carry over their momentum from last season when they finished the year with a six-game winning streak. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Heedum Field in Fremont.
Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) released the football coaches’ poll for the 2020 season during fall camp and Midland finds themselves tied for third place along with their week one opponent, Dordt. Morningside College is the preseason favorite with Northwestern College second.
Last season, the Warriors ended their season with a 7-4 record, finishing third in the conference with a 6-3 record. After starting the year 1-4, with three games being decided by six or fewer points, Midland won the final six games.
The Warriors’ football program looks to continue their success under Coach Jamrog. Since taking the helm in 2016, Midland has posted four consecutive winning seasons.
With many college football teams postponing their seasons this fall, this year will be unique to everyone. The GPAC will play a conference-only schedule amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the NAIA has announced that the playoffs and national championship will take place this spring. Maintaining focus during the already abnormal offseason and strange fall season, many could foresee problems, but the Warriors look poised to rise above the adversity and not let it affect their on-field performance this year.
The Warriors will be returning with talent on both sides of the ball with a pair of first-team all-conference players returning. Junior tight end Austin Harris was the team leader in touchdown catches last season, and junior defensive lineman Trevor Havlovic was the tackle leader. The Warriors also return second-team all-conference running back in sophomore Maximus Wold. He led the team in both rushing touchdowns and rushing yards in 2019.
Saturday’s game will be a rematch of the 2019 finale as the Warriors take on the Defenders. Last season’s contest ended in exciting fashion as Midland hit a game-winning field goal in the final minute for a 31-28 victory. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in Fremont at Heedum Field.
