FPS Update on COVID-19 and Labor Day Break

FREMONT – Fremont Public Schools released information on September 3 related to:
  1. The number of students and staff absent due to testing positive for COVID-19.
  2. The number of students and staff in quarantine due to close contact exposure to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 or awaiting test results.
  3. The number of students utilizing the virtual learning environment.
The breakdown of the numbers is as follows:
  • Number of Students not in school today due to a positive COVID-19 Test: 3
  • Number of Students not in school today due to quarantine: 33
  • Total number of students absent today for any illness: 163

  • Number of employees not working today due to a positive COVID-19 Test: 1
  • Number of employees not working today due to quarantine: 17
  • Number of certified teaching staff not at work today for any reason: 26
The number of students quarantined due to exposure is testimony to the impact of contact-tracing, which FPS works together with Three Rivers Public Health Department to achieve. Quarantining individuals, due to exposure, greatly limits the spread of the virus and keeps others safe.
The District also released the current enrollment numbers for students participating in the virtual learning environment. As of today, 765 students are enrolled in the virtual school option – this represents approximately 16.02% of the overall student enrollment of 4,774.
The District does not release information by school or grade level in an effort to not share information that is personally identifiable. This would be in violation of FERPA (FederalEducation Rights to Privacy Act) and potentially employment and HIPAA (Health InsurancePortability Accountability Act) laws.
The Three Rivers Public Health Risk Dial for Dodge County lowered from 2.25, where it has been for the past two weeks, to 2.0 – between the Yellow and Orange risk levels. Positivity rate and positive cases in the county continue to drive the Risk Dial on a rolling three-week average.
“The Risk Dial trending in a positive direction was anticipated based on the past several weeks’ data. With the three week average, we already know the previous three weeks and can make some projections based on the week rolling off and the new one being added,” stated Mark Shepard, Superintendent of Schools. “Hopefully we continue to trend in this direction.”
Three Rivers Public Health Department, working with area school districts, continues to analyze the data related to exposures at school and, to date, has not had a single positive test due to transmission at school when all parties were wearing a mask. The District continues to identify ways to strengthen protocols and keep students and staff safe.
Friday, September 4 through Tuesday, September 8, Fremont Public Schools will not be in session for students. Friday and Tuesday will be utilized for additional time for teachers to prepare lessons for the virtual school environment. Friday morning will begin with a wellness webinar for all school employees. The webinar is designed to help staff deal with the impact of COVID-19 and is being provided through the District’s health insurance carrier.
“We know our staff has been taking care of our students and families since the beginning of the pandemic this past March. We also know that if they do not take care of themselves, their ability to care for others is greatly reduced – the webinar, additional time for preparation, and retooling are greatly needed,” Shepard said.
“We appreciate the acknowledgment by the Administration and Board of Education of the need to care for our staff as they care for our students,” stated Doug Sheppard, Fremont Education Association President, and 6th-grade teacher. “We have a great working relationship with the Board and Administration and continue to work together to provide for the needs of our students and their families,” concluded Sheppard.
