FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University’s men’s and women’s cross country teams will begin their 2020 season this upcoming Saturday. The Warriors make the short trek to Sioux Center, Iowa for the Sunflower Opener hosted by Dordt University.
Midland returns five runners on the men’s team with senior Daniel Olson leading the way. He’ll be joined on the course by Alex France, Jose Gonzalez, Christian McCafferty, Ross McMahon, and newcomer Gabe Becher. Last year the men placed 7th at the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Championship and sent a single runner onto the NAIA Nationals.
On the women’s side, the Warriors will have an even mix of returners and newcomers with four each. Seniors Ally Muessel and Vivian Sanchez-Gutierrez will lead the charge with junior Erin Kahnk and sophomore Jaineily Ortiz also returning from last year’s team. The incoming class is made up of four freshmen; Emma Christianson, Jaden Donley, Madilynn Edwards, and Myia Johnson. Midland will look improve upon their 9th place finish a year ago at the GPAC Championship.
“Our returners started prepping for this season back in April, and have put in a lot of quality work,” commented head coach Daniel Gerber. “We’re really excited to see the improvements they have made and excited to get back on the course. On the women’s side, our newcomers bring a lot of talent and depth that will help improve our conference standing.”
