Kornhusker Kids 4-H Club Competes in Virtual Crop Scouting Competition

NEBRASKA- This year, due to COVID-19, the annual Youth Crop Scouting Competition was held virtually via zoom on Tuesday, July 28th. Normally, this contest is held in Ithaca, Nebraska. Four teams competed in this year’s contest including Colfax County 4-H, Kornhusker Kids Team 1, Kornhusker Kids Team 2, and Arlington FFA.
This year’s contest began with a 20-question test via Kahoot where teams worked together to answer questions online. Then, teams rotated through breakout rooms answering different questions on topics including weed identification, diseases, entomology, corn growth, and soybean growth. Judges presented questions or scenarios and then gave each team a chance to answer.
Before ending, the four teams also learned about careers in CASNR (College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources) from Rachel Ibach, a UNL CASNR Recruitment Associate. The virtual competition wrapped up with awards and debriefing scouting exercises.
The Kornhusker Kids Team 1 finished in 2nd place. The Kornhusker Kids Team 2 finished in 3rd place. Team 1 consisted of Payton Schiller, Levi Schiller, Kaleb Hasenkamp, and Matthew Rolf. Team 2 consisted of Landon Hasenkamp, Ian Schiller, Ethan Kreikemeier, and James Rolf.
