Legislature Passes Emergency Medical Services Cost Bill

LINCOLN — A bill that would make it illegal for Nebraska health care providers to charge patients higher, out-of-network rates, for emergency services has won final approval in the Legislature.
Senators voted 47-0 today to pass the measure through the last of three required votes. It now goes to Governor Pete Ricketts to be signed.
Sen. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln proposed the bill to try to protect consumers from unexpected out-of-network costs during a medical emergency. Morfeld has argued that unexpected medical bills are a leading cause of personal bankruptcies. Patients in emergency situations frequently go out of their way to hospital systems “in-network” for their insurance in emergency situations, oftentimes passing at least one emergency room on their way to one they can afford.
