BLM Protestors Promote Peace And Change In Fremont

Fremont- On Sunday, May 31st, at 5 pm a group of Black Lives Matter (BLM) protestors gathered at the intersection of 23rd and Bell to fight for better treatment and equality of persons of color.
Protests like these have sprung up all over the nation after the wrongful death of Georgy Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis Police Officers.
Midland University’s Black Student Union President, Branden Mills, organized the protest to gather friends and other community members to step up and show solidarity for the BLM movement.

Mills said, “We just wanted to show awareness that Black Lives Matter and that we stand for something here in the Fremont community…we called the Fremont Police Department beforehand and let them what we would be doing, where, for how long, and why. They were very supportive and came to the protest and talked to us for a while, took pictures, and even protected us and made sure no one was going to mess with us while we peacefully protested. We really appreciated FPD doing that because it showed they cared for us.”
Mills also commented and said, “The bigger goal we want to accomplish is to bring an end to racism, discrimination, and prejudice. We were out there for about two hours and it was just amazing to see all of the support with people honking, waving, giving us thumbs-up, and the symbolic fist of the movement. Small towns and cities make big impacts and we know Fremont can help be the change this world needs to see.”
Fremont Police Department Lieutenant, Kurt Bottorff, was one of the officers who came and spoke with the protestors and he said, “The organizers of the event called in advance, checked with guidelines, and made sure that they would be peaceful and respectful to the Fremont Community. They did an outstanding job of that. I cannot stress enough that they were very peaceful, cordial, and they did it exactly how they said they were going to do it. A couple of photos were taken with them and they were a very pleasant group.”
