Fremont Area United Way and Fremont Rotary Partner To Help Families In Need

FREMONT- In this time of crisis, although they are unable to hold regular meetings, the Fremont Rotary Club is
still working to give back to the community.
Fremont Rotary recently became aware of the availability of Emergency District Grants for projects related to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Their Board reached out to United Way to explore ways they could partner to provide some relief to those most impacted in the Fremont area.
The result was a grant proposal to purchase gift cards from local restaurants and provide those gift cards to families who may be in crisis due to loss of jobs, reduction of hours, inability to work due to loss of daycare, or the closure of the schools, etc. This particular grant is two-fold as it is helping local restaurants who are facing unprecedented challenges at this time as well.
District 5650 and Rotary International approved the application for a $2,500 matching grant which was combined with $2,500 from Fremont Rotary to purchase $5,000 worth of gift cards. Fremont Area United Way is now distributing those gift cards to some of the families in Fremont who are applying for basic needs assistance due to COVID-19.
One big effect of the current crisis is a growing number of families and individuals who are food insecure. Food insecurity means that someone’s access to food or eating has decreased because of a lack of money and other resources. As people in our community face furloughs, layoffs, and other financial challenges, the need to have access to low-cost and free food has increased.
A family that is struggling to pay their mortgage, rent, or utilities might not have the extra funds to eat out right now and by giving a gift card to a local Fremont restaurant the family could choose the day for a special meal for their family. The Fremont Rotary is partnering with United Way to accomplish this so a child’s birthday, anniversary, or graduation does not get missed.
“We understand that these are difficult times and we hope a warm meal from a friendly Fremont restaurant is helpful and uplifting,” said Executive Director Christy Fiala.
Local families and individuals that go through the case management process who qualify for rent and utility assistance that need extra help may receive a gift card. Call Fremont Area United Way at (402)-721-4157 to get connected to a case manager.
Fremont Area United Way is proud of the work they are doing with partners in the community, and together with The Fremont Rotary Club. When it counts, this community comes together. We see this every day and especially in response to recent events. Fremont Area United Way is thankful to The Rotary Club for this opportunity to give our neighbors a warm meal. We are truly in this together.
