Larry D. Thomas


Larry D. Thomas age 82 of Fremont passed away Tuesday May 14, 2019 at Edgewood Memory Care in Fremont.  Larry was born September 9, 1936 in Valley, Nebraska to Chauncey D. and Dorothy M. (Sullivan) Thomas.

Larry grew up and lived in Valley, Ames, and Columbus, Nebraska before moving to Fremont after the 7th grade.  He attended Fremont High School and Midland College for a year. He served in the US Navy from July 1, 1954 to June 13, 1957 during the Korean War. He was on the USS Maury serving in England, Ireland, Newfoundland, Labrador, Vieques, Gibraltar, France, Sicily, Italy, Africa, St. Thomas, Trinidad, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Larry married Mary Ann (Keisler) on January 3, 1959 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He worked as a US Postman in Fremont for many years retiring on September 2, 1992.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fremont, Fremont VFW Post #854 and charter member of the Pathfinder Chorus in Fremont. He also belonged to several Barbershop Quartets while in the Pathfinder Chorus.  Larry golfed and was a member of Whitetail Run Golf League in Fremont and Elkhorn Valley Golf Club in Hooper, Nebraska. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and play cards.

Survived by his wife, Mary Ann Thomas of Fremont; son, Tyler (Wendy) Thomas of  North Carolina; daughter, Jill (Rick) Haskins of  Pennsylvania; 2 grand daughters, Sarah Haskins and Amber (Justin) Shal: great grandson, Gavin Shal all of Pennsylvania; 1 step-grandson, Drew Spear of North Carolina: in-laws, Bettye Glover of South Carolina, James (Patience) Keisler of Louisiana and Norman Jeanne Keisler (Wayne) McGillick of Fremont and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lloyd (Mary) and Sam (Mildred) Thomas and sisters, Phyllis (Howard) Holub and Mary Ellen (Fritz) Kaul and brothers in law, Jerry Glover and Frank Keisler.

Memorial Service will be 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at First Lutheran Church in  Fremont. Rev. Stephanie Tollefson will officiate.

Interment and military honors will be conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of VFW Post 854 and American Legion Post 20 at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Memorials are suggested to First Lutheran Church Radio Program, Kindred Hospice or Dodge County Humane Society.
