Warriors Wrestling Place Four at Swede Open

LINDSBORG, Kan. – Midland University had four wrestlers place at the Swede Open on Saturday in Lindsborg, Kansas. The Warriors, who are ranked 13th in the NAIA Preseason Coaches’ Poll, had 13 wrestlers competing in the event that featured over 20 schools.

Daniel Vargas placed 2nd at 125, going 4-1 on the day. He won his first match via a pin over Nick Burks (Central Christian). Then followed that up with a tech. fall over Ivan Ozuna (Schreiner) by a score of 17-0. In the quarterfinals he won by a major decision of Logan McDowell (Bethany), 18-6. He advanced to the championship after a disqualification of Brian Gates (Barton) in the semifinals. Mason Naifeh (Northeast Oklahoma) defeated Vargas via tech. fall, 20-5, in the championship match.

Jonas Gaytan finished 2nd at 133 with a 3-1 record. He won an 8-7 decision over Pierce Mederios (York) in his opening bout. In the quarterfinals he won an 8-3 decision over Conrad Cole (Fort Hays State) and then in the semifinals he won via sudden victory (SV-1 10-8) over Tyler Lawley (Newman). In the championship match he lost via a pin to Boo Dryden (Northeast Oklahoma).

At 165 it was Domonique Evans placing 4th. He won his first two matches via tech. fall. The first 18-3 over Joesph Guerra (Colby CC) and the second by a score of 18-3 over Nicholas Speno. In the quarterfinals he lost to Isaiah Luellen on a 5-2 decision. The then won his next three matches (Fall, Dec 8-5, and Dec 6-2) in the consolation bracket to get the third place match. In that match, he lost via forfeit to Brandon Archuleta (Bethany).

Stephon Gray placed third at 174, winning five straight after dropping his opening match, a sudden victory by Gage McBride (Barton). He won a 8-5 decision over Nick Jouret, a 13-3 major decision over Nate Panagakis (Newman), then pinned Kendall Johnson (Barton), won via injury default over Nick Meck (Fort Hays State), and finally a 5-1 decision over Devin Crawl for third place.

Midland will open up conference dual action this Thursday when they host (RV) Concordia. They Warriors and Bulldogs will hit the mat inside the Wikert Event Center at 7:00 p.m. on November 15th.
