MAIZE, Kan. – Midland University was one of several schools that competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championship in Maize, Kansas over the weekend. The teams competed in singles and doubles competitions with a winner in both the championship and consolation brackets.
Miguel Abete, Luca Struffi, and Nathen Bitzer all competed in their first matches as a Warrior on the men’s side, joining Enrique Del Rio.
Abete won a pair of matches, over Leand Celedino (Southwest Christian) and Peirce Klaussen (Tabor), before falling to eventual runner-up Alejandro Oviedo of Texas A&M – Texarkana.
Struffi defeated Zhen He (Southwestern Christian) in straight sets before falling to Alejandro Hernandez (Baker).
Del Rio also went 1-1. Defeating Shingi Chingaya (Kansas Wesleyan) before falling to Alberto Cabrillo (Texas A&M – Texarkana). Bitzer lost both of his matches.
In doubles, the duo of Stuffi and Abete had a pair of wins, dispatching Marcelo Mann and Sam DeNike of Southwestern and then Rick Sakamoto and Jacob Komel of McPherson. They would lose to eventual runners-up, Oviedo and Cabrillo of Texas A&M – Texarkana.
On the women’s side it was returners Christina Villareal and Elyse Splichal competing individually and then as a double pair for the Warriors.
Individually Villareal lost both of her matches while Splichal went 1-2 with the lone win coming over Zofia Selwesiuk of Kansas Wesleyan.
Paired up the duo lost their lone match to Oliva Brubacher and Tessa Isaac of Tabor.
Midland Tennis is now off until the spring semester.
