LINCOLN, Neb. – Midland University’s shotgun sports team earned the High Overall Award at the Midland Ice-Out held March 9-10. The Warriors also had five individuals take top honors at the event.
Midland had a combined total of 1,794 targets to win the event. Lindenwood University was second with 1,776 and Doane University was third with 1,631. The Warriors were the top team in skeet with 484 targets, international skeet with 237 and top with 475.
“We’re still knocking off some rust. We didn’t shoot as well as we are capable of but still won the match, so that is great,” Coach Bret Erickson said. “We had some freshman and sophomores step up and shoot some great scores, so if they continue to perform and we get our upperclassmen back to form, we should be tough to beat.”
Sophomore Cole Collier earned the men’s High Overall Award with 371 combined targets, and senior Hank McThenia was in third with 358. Sophomore Paige Denny was second in the women’s High Overall Award competition with 335 combined targets with senior Tessa Hardin coming in third.
Other Warriors who finished first in a category were Hardin in the women’s 5-stand with 43 targets, McThenia in the men’s international skeet with 49 targets, sophomore William Faeth in men’s trap with 96 targets, and senior Alicia Dale in the women’s trap with 94 targets.
Freshman Kaleb Scherer was second in men’s skeet with 99 targets.
Members of the Warriors shotgun sports team are scheduled to compete at several events this weekend, including the Southern Grand American in Tampa, Florida; the Arizona State Grand in Phoenix, Arizona; and at the Fort Hays State Invitational in Salina, Kansas.
