BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Midland University took to the road this weekend for a pair of conference games with Illinois State University and came up short in both games. The Warriors fell to the Redbirds 4-1 on Friday and then 5-2 on Saturday in Midwest College Hockey play.
On Friday the two teams were tied after one period of play as Kevin Finley found the back of the net for Midland. He scored on a pass from Drew Carriere at the 15:18 mark of the period. That evened the score as Illinois State had scored less than 30 seconds prior.
The Redbirds would go up again in the second period with a power-play goal midway through the period. They would add to their one goal lead with two more in the third period for the series opening win.
Saturday’s saw Midland take the early lead as Finley scored once again off a pass from Carriere. The duo connected just 37 seconds in the opening period to give the Warriors a lead. That lead wouldn’t last long as ISU scored at the 3:06 mark and then again at the 16:53 mark to give them a lead they wouldn’t give up.
Illinois State got one goal in second period to take a 3-1 lead into the final 20 minutes of action. In that final period they would score less than a minute in before Midland responded with their second goal of the game.
With 9:21 left in the game Luke Sanko lit the lamp off a pass from Finley. That goal ended a three game scoreless stretch for the senior captain.
Late in the period Illinois State would get one more goal on an empty net with just over a minute to go to seal the weekend sweep.
The Warriors and Redbirds will meet on up once more in the regular season, as the two teams will play one another on February 7-8 in Fremont, Nebraska.
Midland (5-6, 2-4 MWH) will get a break from conference play as they host Creighton for one game on Friday, November 8. The Warriors and Bluejays will hit the ice at 7:45 p.m. inside Sidner Ice Arena in Fremont.
