DES MOINES, Iowa – Mother Nature once again played havoc with Midland University’s track and field schedule as they competed in 2018 Jim Duncan Invitational this past weekend. The meet schedule was adjusted to get most events completed on Friday before the cold and snow swept through the region and ultimately several field events were scratch completely.
Of the field events that were completed, the Warriors excelled in both the women’s hammer throw and the men’s triple jump. Avery Blahauvietz placed 5th in the hammer with a toss of 141’ 8”. The mark was a new personal best and moves her closer to overtaking the sixth spot all-time in the event at Midland.
Abbas Muhammad III and Trey Rogisch both placed in the men’s triple jump with new season-bests. Abbas jumped 44’ 10.25” for 2nd place while Trey’s best jump was 41’ 0.5” to finish 6th place.
On the oval the Midland men had three athletes place individually and one relay place as well.
Jeremiah Harris was 5th in the 100m with a time of 10.90. Travis Phillips Jr. was 4th in the 400m with a time of 50.06. Both were season bests.
Cortland Cassidy finished in 3rd place in the 5000m race with a time of 16:22.28. The time was a new personal best for him in the event.
Jeremiah, Travis and Abbas were joined by Farrakhan Muhammad on the men’s 4x100m relay team. The group finished 4th at the meet with a time of 42.62. It is the fifth fastest time in school history.
“The relay team and other runners ran well despite less than ideal conditions,” head coach Mark Kosteck commented. “The team has been doing well this season despite poor weather at most of our meets. Hopefully we can get some nicer weather and use these next couple of weeks to make a strong push into the GPAC Championships and into Nationals.”
Midland will take part in a pair of event this weekend. Part of the team will travel to Lawrence, Kansas to take part in the 2018 Kansas Relays while the others will travel to Crete, Nebraska for the Jim Dutcher Invitational. The Warriors will compete at the KU Relays on Thursday through Saturday and then compete at the Dutcher Invite on Sunday.
