Warriors Open Indoor Track and Field Season at SDSU Holiday Invite

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Midland University opened up their 2018-19 indoor track and field season this past weekend at the South Dakota State University Holiday Invite in Brookings, South Dakota. The Warriors were one of several teams competing in the two-day event meet that began on Friday that featured a mix of NCAA Division I, II and III schools as well as six NAIA schools.

Against some of the toughest competition they’ll face this season, Midland had 13 top 25 finishes, several new personal best and three national qualifiers.

Nathan Houser (61’ 0.75”) and Reid Kirlin (57’ 3.75”) both reached the NAIA ‘A’ Standard in the men’s weight throw while Dylan Kucera (54’ 4”) reached the ‘B’ Standard also in the weight throw.

Victoria Leffler finished 14th in the women’s triple jump with a best mark of 37’ 7.5”. Teammates Matti Barnts was 18th in the women’s 60m with a time of 8.45 second and Vivian Sanchez placed 14th in the women’s 800m with a time of 2.25.89 second.

On the men’s side there was one school record broken as Lucas Weyrich ran a time 22.57 second in the men’s 200m, placing 11th. He also placed 10th in the men’s 60m hurdles with a time of 8.54 seconds.

Dylan Hill was 11th in the men’s 800m with a time of 2:12.29.

In the jumping events Abbas Muhammad III was 11th in the men’s long jump with a leap of 20’ 8.5” and 8th in the men’s triple jump with a jump of 42’ 6.75”.

In the weight throw that saw three Warriors reach the NAIA qualifying standard, Houser finished 6th, Kirlin was 12th and Kucera placed 17th.

Kirlin and Kucera both competed in the men’s shot put finishing 15th and 13th respectively. Reid’s best effort went for 48’ 5.5” while Dylan’s best was measured at 48’ 11.5”.

“It’s always great to come out of the first meet with a couple of national qualifiers, especially headed into the layoff that we will have over Christmas Break” head coach Daniel Gerber stated. “The start that our newcomers had is very encouraging moving forward. It is an exciting start to the indoor season.”

Up next for the Warriors will be the Charlie Foster Pre-Holiday Classic in Kearney, Nebraska. The meet was originally slated to take place on Friday and Saturday, bust has been adjusted to take place solely on Saturday December 8th beginning at 11:30 a.m. inside Cushing Coliseum.
