Warriors Open Basketball Season with Loss at Bethany

LINDSBORG, Kan. – On Saturday afternoon the 2018-19 Midland University men’s basketball season tipped off inside Hahn Gymnasium as the Warriors took on the Swedes of Bethany University. After falling behind by 21 points early, Midland battled back to tie the game at the intermission before running out of gas and falling 90-83.

Midland featured a large group of newcomers in the opener as they return just five players from last year’s varsity roster. Two of those players were out of the lineup though as one is still recovering from an offseason surgery and another was out due to illness.

Junior Ryan Williams was the lone returner in the starting lineup. He was joined in the starting lineup by freshman Bowen Sandquist, juniors Bryce Parsons and DJ Deere, and senior Luke Cadzow.

Williams would play 33 minutes in the game, registering 19 points and 7 rebounds before picking up his fifth foul down the stretch on a play that also saw him suffer an injury to nose. Parsons had 22 points with 11 rebounds and Sandquist led the way with 26 points off of 7 made three-pointers.

As a team the Warriors shot 41% from the field (26-63) and 33% from behind the arc (10-30). They also sank 21-32 free throws for 65.6%.

Midland (0-1) will open up their home schedule next Saturday with a game against College of the Ozarks (0-0). Tipoff on October 27th is set for 7:00 p.m. inside Wikert Event Center in Fremont, Nebraska.
