WINFIELD, Kan. – Midland University’s men’s tennis team won one of three matches in a weekend road trip. The Warriors swept Friends but lost 0-9 to (RV) Texas A&M-Texarkana and 1-8 to Southwestern.
“We played two really good teams in Texas A&M-Texarkana and Southwestern College,” Coach John Steinke said. “Texarkana was a level ahead of us, and their depth really showed. We fought hard but were not able to get a match. Friends was a little weaker than Texarkana, but every team you play at this level has a good top of the lineup.”
Ryan Vitera and Dylan Hatanelas started off Midland’s run against Friends with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Noah Bernal and Steve Deere followed with an 8-0 victory. Alex Zoller and Dan Klausmeier won their match by default.
In singles, Salvador Almeida opened with a 6-2, 6-2 victory, followed by Jack Fryer with a 7-5, 6-4 win. Jamie Olarieta and Zoller each won their singles’ matches 6-0, 6-0. Bernal and Klausmeier won by default.
Enrique Lopez had the lone victory against Southwestern, winning 2-6, 6-2 (14-12) in No. 5 singles.
“I was disappointed that we were not able to keep it close against Southwestern,” Steinke said. “I thought we fought hard, but we did not play up to the level that we wanted to. The team will take this one and come back stronger the next time.”
Midland, now 6-6 on the season, faces Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney, Nebraska, on Tuesday.
