GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Midland University hit the road on Thursday for a non-conference dual meet at Colorado Mesa University. The Warriors came up just short against stout competition by the Mavericks, losing 32-15.
Esther Walker opened the dual for Midland at 101 against Jennesis Martinez. Martinez would pin Walker to earn the Mavericks five points. They would get another five points at 109 as Midland was open at that weight.
In the bout at 116 it was Ashley Gooman of Midland getting five points back with a takedown at the 4:09 mark of Anja Tschohl. Hailey Schiermeyer did her best to get some more points for the Warriors at 123 but Marissa Gallegos was too much to handle as she lost a 7-0 decision.
The Warriors would drop the next three matches by way of fall or tech fall. Avery Thomason fell to Cindy Zepeda at 130, Tanalei Louis lost by tech fell to Dalia Garibay at 136, and Kaelie Tomlin fell to Alma Mendoza at 143.
In the bout at 155 it was Midland’s Kamalamaokapomahealani Lewis earning a quick 1:27 pin of Kira Gilland. The victory made the dual score 29-10 with a pair of matches left.
The two teams would split the remaining dual matches by way of forfeits as Midland was open at 170 and CMU was open at 191.
Midland will take a short break from competition before returning to the mats in a couple of weeks. The Warriors will travel to the Lone Star State on December 7 for the Wayland Baptist Invitational. That event set to begin at 9:00 a.m. in Plainview, Texas.
