SEWARD, Neb. – Midland University’s track and field teams wrapped up their regular season schedule and with it their last chances to set qualifying marks for the upcoming national championships. A handful of Warriors made the trek to Seward, Nebraska for the Concordia Twilight meet on Friday and came away with mixed results.
Jeremiah Harris and Victoria Leffler both came up just short in their bid to reach the NAIA ‘B’ Standard in their events. Harris was trying to qualify in the men’s 100m while Leffler was attempting to qualify in both the women’s long jump and triple jump.
Others competing in the meet for Midland had already secured their spot in the NAIA Outdoor Nationals, but were looking to improve their marks and potentially their seeding.
Avery Blahauvietz had a handful of strong throws and set a new season best in the women’s hammer throw. She improved by over two meters from the GPAC meet last week with a strong throw of 49.88m (163’ 8”) on Friday.
For the trio of men’s throwers, each of them recorded a new season and personal best in their events.
Dylan Kucera competed in the shot put and hammer throw. His throw of 17.03m (55’ 10.5”) in the shot put was a new personal best outdoors and his hammer throw of 52.20m (171’ 3”) bested his previous mark by three inches.
Seth Sabata also made improvements in both the shot put and hammer throw. His mark of 17.59m (57’ 8.5”) in the shot put now ranks 4th best in the NAIA this year. In the hammer throw he improved his mark to 59.18m (194’ 2”) which is 7th best in the country.
Reid Kirlin only competed in the hammer throw but set a new personal best with a toss of 57.21m (187’ 8”). That mark ranks 8th nationally and is an improvement of over four feet from his previous best.
Midland will look to continue their momentum and keep making strides as they prepare for the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The final meet of the year will take place on May 23-25 down in Gulf Shores, Alabama at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium. For a list of qualifiers and their current national rank, see below.
