FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University’s baseball team continued their winning streak with a 6-3 over Doane University on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors move on to the finals of the Midland Bracket. Midland has now won nine straight ballgames, including five over the Tigers and one over their foe, the Lancers, to begin the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Postseason Tournament.
Dakota Cortese pitched a gem on the hill for the Warriors. He went 8.1 innings, keeping the Tigers’ offense in check allowing just three runs while striking out nine batters. Billy Brand came on to wrap up the final two outs.
Nolan Luzzi led the way offensively with a pair of RBI on the day. He had a two-run double in the 4th inning that broke a 1-1 tie and put the Warriors up for good. Buddy Balsino, Gabriel Settles and Bryan Smith each had an RBI as well.
Midland (31-19) will face Mount Marty (29-20) on Monday at noon. The Lancers will have to beat the Warriors twice in order to move on to the GPAC Championship game while Midland needs just one win.
Mount Marty fell to the Warriors in the opening game of the tournament, 12-8, before winning a pair of games on Saturday. Their second win actually was completed on Sunday morning as their game with Doane didn’t get started until 11:00 p.m. at Moller Field. They came back from a 9-1 deficit heading into the 8th inning to eventually win in 11 innings off of a wild-pitch to tie the game and a grand slam to cap off the victory.
