No. 18 Midland Hockey Splits with Indiana Tech

FREMONT, Neb. – In a matchup of Warriors versus Warriors, No. 18 Midland University and Indiana Tech split a pair of games on the ice this weekend in Fremont. Indiana Tech took the opener on Friday by a score of 7-5 and Midland won the finale with a dominating 8-1 victory.

On Friday, Midland jumped out to a lead less than two minutes into the game with a goal by Brad Hepler. Indiana Tech would answer not just once but twice with a pair of goals coming in the 13th minute.

The second period was nearly a carbon copy as Midland once again score quickly out of the break, a goal by Drew Carriere at 1:43. It was followed up by a pair of Tech goals one at 14:05 and another at 15:23. Indiana Tech led 4-2 heading into the second intermission.

After that final break though Midland came out firing on all cylinders offensively. They scored early, at the 3:52 mark, on a goal by Cy Jenson to pull within in one. Then midway through the period Hepler tied up the game with a goal and then Ben Henry gave MU their first lead with 5:23 left in the game.

That’s when Indiana Tech regained their poise and tied the game up with 4:55 left and then they earned game-winner with less than a minute left. They would get an empty-netter as time wound down for the 7-5 victory.

Saturday’s game featured nearly as many goals but the game was one-sided in favor of Midland. They scored four goals in the first period and never looked back.

Carriere scored the first goal 44 seconds into the game to start the onslaught. Colton Jones, Taylor McConnell and Hepler scored in the first period as well.

The second saw both Warrior teams net a goal each. Indiana Tech’s came first at the 4:04 mark and then Blake Neumann matched it at 12:58 of the period.

Midland would add goals by Jones, Carriere and Kevin Finley in the third to cap off the 8-1 victory. It was Indiana Tech’s first loss of the season. The two teams will renew their rivalry next season when Midland joins Tech in the NAIA Division of the ACHA.

Midland (12-12) will hit the road this next weekend to take on Lindenwood-Belleville (8-8). The Lynx and the Warriors will play a pair of games at the Ice Zone in Hazelwood, Missouri. Friday’s game is slated for a 10:15 p.m. puck drop and Saturday’s game is set for 10:30 p.m.
