Nebraska Women’s Basketball: Huskers, Mavs Both Claim Wins


Kate Cain and Ashtyn Veerbeek both produced big double-doubles and Leigha Brown led four Huskers in double figures with a career-high 18 points, as Nebraska rolled to a 96-63 women’s basketball win over San Jose State on Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Cain, a 6-5 sophomore center from Middletown, N.Y., notched her second double-double of the year with season highs of 16 points and 17 rebounds while adding three blocked shots. Cain went 8-for-9 from the field, while also adding a pair of assists and two steals in just 23 minutes of action. It was the seventh double-double of Cain’s career.

Nebraska completes its three-game home stand next Saturday when the Huskers take on Denver. Tip time for the match-up with the Pioneers will be at 4:30 p.m.


The Omaha women’s basketball team earned a 53-46 comeback win over CSU Bakersfield Sunday at Baxter Arena.

With the win, the Mavericks improved to 5-4 on the season while the Roadrunners are now 4-5.

Rayanna Carter scored a game-high 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor to lead the Mavericks.  Elena Pilakouta added 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.

Josie Filer grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points and three steals.  Sophie Johnstonchipped in seven points and five boards.

Omaha returns to action on Friday, Dec. 14 against Bradley.  Tipoff is set for noon at Sapp Fieldhouse.
