Midland Tennis Teams Win Third Straight Matches

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University’s men’s and women’s tennis teams collected their third straight victories Friday in a nearly clean sweep of Sterling College at the Fremont Family YMCA. The men improve to 5-4 overall with a 9-0 win in the men’s match while the women move to 5-3 overall with their 8-1 victory.

Sacha Borel and Dylan Hatanelas opened the men’s competition with an 8-5 victory in No. 1 doubles, followed by Jack Fryer and Enrique Lopez’s 8-1 win, and Ryan Vitera and Christian Slupe’s 8-0 victory.

Salvador Almeida came back to win at No. 1 singles 3-6, 7-5 (11-0); followed by victories from Fryer (6-1, 6-2), Hatanelas (6-1, 6-0), Vitera (6-0, 6-0), Lopez (6-1, 6-0) and Alex Zoller (6-1, 6-0).

Gretchen Cooper and Sarah Wood opened the women’s match with an 8-3 victory in No. 1 doubles with Annie Allman and Christian Villarreal taking No. 2 doubles (8-4) and Danielle Martin and Carolyn Howten winning No. 3 doubles (8-0).

Sterling’s lone victory came at No. 1 singles, with the Warriors sweeping the rest of the singles matches. Allmand won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, followed by Wood (6-0, 6-2), Villarreal (6-0, 6-2), Howton (6-0, 6-1), and Martin (6-0, 6-1).

Midland hits the road for its next three matches. The Warriors travel to Winfield, Kansas, to face Texas A&M-Texarkana and Friends on March 9 and Southwestern on March 10.
