The Midland University women and men’s soccer teams both earned home upset wins over nationally ranked Hastings College, last night at Heedum Field.
In women’s action, 17th-ranked Midland downed the 12th-ranked Broncos, 2-0. Nayeli Rodriguez put the Warriors up in the 19th minute and Bailey Locano added an insurance goal in the 77th minute. Rachel Thigpen, the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Defender of the week, stopped six shots for her fifth consecutive shutout. The Lady Warrior are 11-2-1 and 8-1 in the GPAC and Hastings is 11-3, and 7-2 in the league.
In men’s action, Midland knocked off seventh-ranked Hastings, 2-1. James Kilburn put the Warriors up 1-0 after a rebound from a penalty kick save in the 24th minute. The Warriors added the eventual game-winner when GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Offensive Player of the week Mike Eijgendaal found the back of the net in the 30th minute. The Broncos, Tom Steging would cut the lead in half five minutes before halftime, but both teams played a scoreless second half to hand Midland the win. The Warriors are 11-3-2 and 7-1-1 in the conference, while Hastings is 11-1-2 and 7-1 in the league.
