LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Midland University’s bowling teams finished in the top eight of two highly competitive tournaments over the holiday break in Las Vegas. The Warriors landed a pair of bowlers on the All-Tournament Teams at the Glenn Carlson Invitational and Collegiate Shoot-Out.
The Warrior men brought home a fourth-place finish in the Collegiate Shoot-Out Intercollegiate Bowling Tournament on December 20-21 at the Orleans Bowling Center and reached the Elite Eight of the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational on December 18-19 at South Point Bowling Plaza.
The Warrior women finished sixth in the Collegiate Shoot-Out and made the Elite Eight of the Glenn Carlson Invitational.
Senior Landen Weber of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, led the Warriors at the Collegiate Shoot-Out, where Midland combined for 11,581 pins over the two-day event. Weber, bowling in his final tournament for the Warriors, averaged 231.2 to finish in eighth place overall. Alec Karr, a sophomore from Fremont, followed in 12th place with a 226.3 average with freshman Donovan Thomas following in 18th place with a 221.2 average.
Sophomore Candice Goldfinch of Everett, Washington, led the Lady Warriors to their sixth-place finish at the Collegiate Shoot-Out, where Midland combined for 10,367 pins. Goldfinch finished in 14th place overall with a 202.3 average. Sophomore Whitney Lariston of Lincoln, Nebraska, was 24th with a 193.3 average and senior Brianna Oftedahl of Albert Lea, Minn., was 30th with a 189.7 average.
At the Glenn Carlson Invitational, both Midland teams earned No. 4 seeds heading into bracket play. The men totaled 9,421 pins over nine games with the women totaling 8,253 over their nine games.
Thomas led the Midland men by averaging 226.78 over nine games. Overall, he was third and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Karr was ninth overall with a 211.67 average. Others bowling for the Warriors included senior Jared Roberts of Hooper, Nebraska, who averaged 215.86 over seven games; Junior Zach Karr of Fremont, who averaged 208.88 over seven games; and freshman Kristopher Yadao, who averaged 200.71 over seven games.
In match play, the Warriors defeated Urbana in three straight games, 169-163, 182-170, 210-202, before falling to Newman 3-0 (279-208, 217-179, 223-190).
Goldfinch led the Lady Warriors, averaging 202.78, which was second overall and earning her a spot on the All-Tournament team. Others bowling for Midland included freshman Brittney Schnicke, who averaged 193.22 over nine games; Oftedahl, who averaged 169.88 over eight games; sophomore Shelby Throntveit of Discovery Bay, California, who averaged 169.50 over eight games; Lariston, who averaged 178.43 over seven games; and junior Katie Fritchie of Lincoln, who averaged 175.00 over four games.
In match play, the Lady Warriors lost their opening match to Calumet 3-1 (191-220, 201-158, 184-151, 223-166).
Midland will take a break from action before hitting the lanes on January 20-21 when the Warriors will participate in the Kegel/SBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic in Addison, Illinois.
