BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Midland University kicked off their 2018-19 men’s wrestling season on Sunday at the 10th Annual Dan Harris Open in Baldwin City, Kansas. The Warriors had a trio of wrestlers place at the event out of 165 total wrestlers.
Dominique Evans placed second at 165 with a 4-1 overall record. He won his first four matches; a major decision in his first match over Jonny Trowbridge of Neosho CC (12-1), a 17-2 tech. fall over Marius Kulda of Benedictine, a 1-0 decision over Tyler Price of Baker, and a 4-0 decision over Grant Taylor. In the championship match he lost a narrow 7-6 decision to Isaiah Luellen of Fort Hays State.
Jonas Gaytan earned a third place finish at 133, going 3-1 on the day. After receiving an opening round bye, he defeated Gunnar Gentzler in a 13-5 major decision. He lost his next match, an 8-2 decision to Boo Dryden of Neosho CC in the semifinals. On the consolation side he won by disqualification over Adam Ludwin and then won by forfeit over Zane Baugh in the third place match.
Stephon Gray placed third as well, in the 174 division. He won his first match by tech. fall over Nathan Dotson of Fort Hays State, 21-5 and then won via injury default over Jacob Brune. In his semifinal match, he suffered a loss to Deandre Chery of Concordia via a pin. He rebounded in the consolation bracket with a 11-1 major decision over Blake Castillo of Concordia and then won the third place match by pinning Elias Manzanares of Neosho CC.
Other Warriors to pick up wins at the contest were Tristan Snover, who won an 8-0 major decision over Cesar Villanueva of Ottawa at 149, and Derrell Zagurski, who won a 9-3 decision over Charlie Young of St. Mary.
Midland will be on the road again this coming weekend for the Bethany Swede Open in Lindsborg, Kansas. Matches are set to begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10th.
