PLAINVIEW, Texas – Midland University’s men’s and women’s wrestling teams travel to Texas for the Wayland Baptist Open over the weekend. The men put on a dominant performance with nine wrestlers earning top four finishes in their weight while the women had a pair of top four finishers.
Daniel Vargas, Dominique Evans and Stephon Gray each won their weight class. Each wrestler went 4-0 on the day with Vargas winning the 125 pound class, Evans winning the 165 pound class, and Gray taking home the 174 pound class title.
Brothers Julian Gaytan and Jonas Gaytan tied for second place at 133 pounds. They both advanced to the championship match but each forfeited to the other, presumably to keep things civil in the family.
Three Warrior men placed third at the open. Tristan Zamilpa went 4-1 at 149 pounds, Dalton Mueller went 3-1 at 165 pounds, and Alton Johnson went 4-1 at 285 pounds. Fellow Warrior Derrell Zagurski was fourth at 285, going 4-2 on the day.
On the women’s side Chyna Rodriguez placed 3rd at 170 pounds. After dropping her opening match, she had three straight pins to win the consolation bracket.
Serena Sanchez went 2-2 on her day for fourth place at 191 pounds. Two of her wins came via pins.
Up next for the men is a Great Plains Athletic Conference dual with Jamestown on Thursday. The Jimmies will come to Fremont, Nebraska to battle the Warriors beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the Wikert Event Center.
The women’s next scheduled event is the Women’s West Coach Tournament of Champions in Rocklin, California. The two-day event begins on Friday, December 14 at Hardwood Palace.
