Lady Warriors Falls to Ottawa in Tennis

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland was able to pick up a pair of singles matches, but were unable to overcome Ottawa University on Saturday. The Warriors lost 7-2 to the Braves at the Fremont Family YMCA.

“All around, we played well but were unable to win the big points when we needed to,” Coach John Steinke said. “We’ll be working hard this next week to improve before Grand View.”

Christina Villarreal won in three sets (6-3, 1-6, 10-3) at No. 4 singles and Carolyn Howton won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 singles for the Warriors.

“Carolyn and Christina played very well in their matches,” Steinke added. “They fought through some adversity to win two close matches. Our No. 3 doubles (Howton and Alyson Miller) played really well today and put themselves in a good spot to win the match.”

Howton and Miller dropped the No. 3 doubles match 8-6.

Midland, whose overall record is 2-3, heads to Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday to face Grand View University. The Warriors return home Feb. 23 against Bethel College.
